So, you’ve been put in charge of this year’s fundraising efforts and the kids are begging for a school disco. Or… You’ve been put in charge of organising the end of year function for the kids and they want a way to let their hair down and the big ones want to celebrate an end to Primary School and heading to High School.

School discos are a lot of fun and done the right way they don’t have to mean a lot of work.
Here are some things you might want to consider when organising the school disco…
- Tickets
Kids can be notoriously unreliable returning forms or losing money, so consider an online method of taking ticket sales. A number of platforms won’t even charge booking fees for schools.
The benefit of online booking is that you can send emails directly to the parents, you can share booking links in Facebook Groups, and best of all they can be paid for with a credit card. Let’s face it, who has cash on them these days!
- Food and drinks
It doesn’t matter if you choose healthy or a more party style of food and drink, just make sure it’s there and affordable for the kids to purchase.
Another option is to give the kids a snack and drink ticket as part of their entrance fee and this means that you will know from the start how much of each you will need.
As a parent, there’s nothing worse than picking up a tired, hungry, sweaty, thirsty kid after a school disco and trying to get them into bed. The kids will be active and will need something to keep their energy up.
- Novelties
This is often the favourite part of the disco. Glow stick novelties, flashing light rings, tiaras, and crazy disco glasses. Kids love something to remind them of the fun they had that night.
- Photobooth
This is especially popular with the children headed to high school, especially if their friendship groups are being split to attend different schools.
A simple backdrop for them to get together and have a photo taken with their friends is a great momento. (And great for their scrapbook)
- Lighting
For safety reasons, you can’t have the disco area in pitch darkness, strobe lighting and smoke machines can also be an issue. This is why with our disco parties we use coloured lights and disco balls to set the scene.
- Appropriate music
Now while some of the older kids might have more teenage taste in music, the younger ones won’t. You can always run separate discos for junior and upper primary, however most parents, and schools, will want to know that there’s no swearing or inappropriate lyrics in the songs. Another consideration is getting a license to play the songs in a public space.
When you have these sorted, you’re well on your way to organising a great school disco.
